Music helps kids to feel safe when expressing themselves and getting their emotions out. And it's fun.

Barbara Riggins Shares Ideas for Using The Earth's Birthday Sing-Along

Students learn with different intelligences.  I use your songs to enhance my environmental themes. The only CD I had was The Earth's Birthday. I make a copy of the words and they cut and paste the song in their poetry books.
We then choral read together and they illustrate the song.  I put on the CD while they are doing this and we sing it. I let the students pick their favorite and we go back to the songs during the year, both reading and singing.  We highlight different language skills that I want them learn.
I love the music as well as the words.  The students get to their favorite parts, usually in the chorus and belt it out.  My favorite ones are Butterfly, I Want to Plant a Seed and esp. Insect.

Every kid has something to say. Every kid has feelings. We all know this. Music can open the door to these thoughts and feelings and assist a child in discovering himself or herself. When these expressed thoughts and feelings are met with acceptance, the child learns to trust who he or she is. This is a wonderful thing. I've seen some very stubborn turtles poke their heads out in a songwriting session. And even those who don't are probably more likely to one day give it a try for having been in a safe place to express him or herself. It's up to us to create this safe place.
