PARENTS AND TEACHERS' PAGE Activities inspired by Dave's songs |
What sorts of things happen with you
and your kids that make you feel like saying "Aw, Yuckers!"?
Make up a song about each of these things. You don't need a musical instrument;
your voice and body will do fine. Get a little rhythm going with finger snaps or
hand claps or thigh slaps or whatever and express yourself! You'll be amazed at
how much will come out of the kids when the wheels really get rolling. You can
explore different tempos and rhyme schemes; you can use melodies, monotones,
and sound effects; you can be soft or loud -- there are no boundaries!
Every kid has something to say. Every kid has feelings. We all know this. Music can open the door to these thoughts and feelings and assist a child in discovering himself or herself! When these expressed thoughts and feelings are met with acceptance, the child learns to trust who he or she is. This is a wonderful thing. I've seen some very stubborn turtles poke their heads out in a songwriting session. And even those who don't are probably more likely to one day give it a try for having been in a safe place to express yourself. It's up to us to create this safe place.
